Malena and Stefano's relationship is a doomed one from the start, and yet director Giuseppe Tornatore makes it easy for the viewers to sympathize with Malena and to root for her. She is a sweet, gentle soul who reveres her family, a good student with a bright future ahead of her. After a childhood spent being compared unfavorably with her beautiful mother, she finds it liberating to have men throw themselves at her feet for once. Malena later finds out that Stefano has been lying about his feelings for her all along: he merely wants sex from the young girl, not love. He breaks it off saying that Malena reminds him of his dead wife. Her anguish in falling in love with Stefano is palpable: in a single encounter in the rain, Malena and Stefano share a kiss and convey to each other that they can never be together. The next morning he tells her that he will never see her again, and she goes into shock. Malena walks through the streets of the seaside town like a ghost: she isn't happy anymore, but she has no idea how to make herself feel better.
